The two companies announced a partnership to deliver an AI driven Security Service Edge, or SSE, offering, built on Cisco Secure Access, Cisco’s existing cloud delivered security platform, and wrapped in Tech Mahindra’s global managed services and integration expertise.

The core idea behind Security Service Edge, as a category, is to collapse a fragmented pile of point solutions into one cloud native layer sitting between users and everything they touch, applications, devices, networks, and locations, enforcing consistent security policy regardless of where someone happens to be working from. This particular offering bundles a secure web gateway, cloud access security broker, zero trust network access, firewall as a service, and data loss prevention into a single platform, rather than requiring enterprises to license, integrate, and separately manage each of those functions on its own.

Chopra’s reference to what he calls the agentic era is a deliberate nod to that second, newer problem, one the broader cybersecurity industry has been warning about with increasing urgency as AI agents move from experimental pilots into genuine production use.

It is worth applying a genuinely critical eye to how much this announcement itself actually proves, rather than accepting the framing on its own terms. Independent analysis of the launch has pointed out something fairly important sitting underneath the press release language, the announcement names no specific AI function that Tech Mahindra itself operates, cites no benchmark, and points to no deployment where the AI powered controls have actually been tested in production. Securing employee AI use and autonomous agent traffic is a genuine and growing need, and SSE platforms genuinely are evolving to address it, but a managed services partnership layered on top of Cisco’s existing platform does not, on its own, create new AI capability, it repackages and distributes capability Cisco had already built. That distinction matters for how enterprises evaluating this offering should actually think about it. There is also a broader industry pattern worth situating this within. Nearly every major enterprise technology announcement over the past two years has reached for AI powered language somewhere in its framing, regardless of how central artificial intelligence actually is to what is being sold, a reflex that has made it genuinely harder for buyers to distinguish announcements built around real, differentiated AI capability from announcements where AI is simply the most fashionable adjective available to describe an otherwise fairly conventional partnership. This deal reads less like a standalone milestone in enterprise security, and more like the latest entry in a now steady, predictable cadence of large system integrators packaging established platform vendors’ tools as managed offerings, a genuinely useful service for the enterprises that buy it, even if it is considerably less revolutionary than the language wrapped around its announcement suggests.

None of this means the underlying problem Tech Mahindra and Cisco are addressing is not real. Fragmented security tooling genuinely does create the visibility gaps Singh describes, and the shift toward autonomous AI agents operating inside enterprise systems genuinely does demand new security thinking that traditional, human centric access controls were never designed to handle. Whether this specific partnership delivers meaningfully better protection than enterprises could already assemble from Cisco’s existing platform and their own security teams, or whether it primarily delivers convenience and a single vendor relationship wrapped in fashionable AI framing, is a question that will only be answered once enterprises actually deploy it at scale, and considerably more slowly than the launch announcement’s confident language would suggest.
